Although acne can’t be cured, new laser technology can greatly reduce its occurrence. IPL therapy can lessen the blemishes, redness and scars left behind from your teenage years or even more recent bouts with acne. According to the Mayo Clinic, the type of bacteria that causes the redness and swelling of acne can be killed by exposing the skin to light and heat therapy. This type of therapy also reduces the production of oil by shrinking the sebaceous glands, thereby limiting additional occurrences.
At Valley View Laser M.D., we use IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments with Cynosure technology to target and destroy the skin bacteria responsible for acne to help prevent future breakouts from occurring on faces, chests and backs. The pulsed light technology delivers a spectrum of light that is absorbed by porphyrins within the skin, destroying P. acnes bacteria.
Why Light Therapy?
Treating acne with pulsed light can deliver better aesthetic results, especially on inflammatory acne, without the side effects associated with topical and oral acne medications. Topical creams and oral medications can be effective treatments for acne outbreaks, but they can be expensive and can dry and irritate sensitive skin as well as irritate the digestive system. Acne that occurs on backs and chests can be difficult to treat topically because of the large surface area, but IPL technology can treat all affected areas easily. What to Expect
With IPL therapy, you may need multiple treatment sessions. However, with our advanced contact cooling technology, the commonly reported side effects of temporary redness, crusting and peeling in the treated areas are minimal. If multiple treatment sessions are required, you can expect a short healing time. Additionally, the risk of infection is eliminated, and there is only mild to moderate discomfort.
What about Scarring?
Mild acne scarring can often be improved with a combination of IPL followed by deeper laser treatments. This treatment can take multiple sessions over many months, but the results can be quite profound. Microdermabrasion also can be effective in the treatment of acne scarring and is available at our facility as well.
